Baseline-to-Net Cooperative Volley Drill
This rally-based drill helps players build consistency, control, and teamwork between the baseline and the net. By counting the number of successful shots, players stay motivated to beat their record while reinforcing proper volleying technique and active footwork. It’s an excellent activity for kids or beginners to learn how to sustain rallies with focus and control.
Setup
- One player at the baseline
- One player inside the service box near the net
- Basket of balls for continuous play
Rules & Objectives
- Baseline player feeds the ball to begin the rally
- Net player must return all balls as volleys (no bounces allowed)
- Both players count each successful shot aloud during the rally
- When the rally ends, restart and try to beat the previous rally total
- After a set time, switch roles so each player practices both baseline and net positions
Repetition
- Continue rallies for timed rounds (e.g., 2–3 minutes per rotation)
- Require the net player to place volleys past the service line for added challenge
- Require the baseline player to stay on their toes and move actively throughout
- Add scoring: longest rally wins
Coaching Points
- Builds volley consistency and placement
- Improves focus, coordination, and teamwork
- Reinforces active footwork at both the net and baseline
- Keeps younger players motivated with a “beat your record” format
