Approach, Volley, and Smash Sequence

This drill simulates a common match sequence of approach shot, volley, and overhead, helping players sharpen reflexes, quick decision-making, and transition skills. By practicing these three critical shots in sequence, players learn to move forward aggressively, finish points at the net, and recover quickly for overheads. It’s an excellent exercise for developing confidence in attacking play and net coverage.

Setup

  • Players line up single-file a few feet behind the T-line
  • Coach/feeder positioned with a basket of balls
  • Court targets may be marked for added precision (down-the-line or crosscourt)

Rules & Objectives

  • First player begins with a forehand approach shot (down the line if possible)
  • Immediately move forward for a volley (forehand or backhand depending on feed)
  • Coach feeds a lob, forcing the player to retreat diagonally and hit an overhead smash
  • After the sequence, the player returns to the back of the line
  • Repeat sequence for all players
  • After several rounds, switch to begin with a backhand approach shot

Repetition

  • Run the sequence multiple times per player
  • Add targets (cones or markers) for approach shots and volleys
  • Increase difficulty by feeding deeper or higher lobs
  • Time players to complete the sequence faster for conditioning
  • Rotate starting side (forehand or backhand) to balance practice

Coaching Points

  • Trains approach shots with depth and accuracy
  • Improves volley reflexes and net positioning
  • Builds confidence and footwork for overhead smashes
  • Reinforces transition play from baseline to net
  • Develops quick thinking and reflexes under game-like conditions
